Sub Zero IC30FI freezer not cooling, Repair – Los Altos, CA

A customer has Sub Zero IC30FI freezer not cooling. They experienced warm temperatures around 20-30 degree inside the freezer.

This unit is the newest line of integrated appliances from Sub Zero. Integrated Sub Zero refrigerators have multiple advanced features and are overengineered in terms of the number of electronics. Sub Zero even restrict accidental access to the settings menu. Manufacturer created custom codes for each model. The code is the combination of different symbols. You can get those symbols only from Sub Zero tech support team.

So, I called the support team and got the correct code. I entered the setting menu and checked for active error codes. There were couple error codes for extensive compressor run. After I turn on each component manually from the settings menu. I noticed that the evaporator fan motor was not starting every time I called for the start. Sub Zero for the new units uses Panasonic DC fans to reduce the amount of noise. But from my experience, they go bad more often than AC 120v fans.

So I got the permission to repair and order the part. I contacted the manufacturer and unfortunately, this part was out of the warranty. Also, they don’t sell just the fan it comes with the panel and holders.

After I got a fan assembly I scheduled an appointment for part installation.

First I removed all racks, icemaker, sliders and back panel.

Second I removed the fan assembly and install the new one. Sub Zero with those integrated units definitely didn’t think about easy accessibility to the components for service techs. I took at least 3 times longer than similar repair on old models.

Third, I attached all sensors, connect the fan wiring and put all panels back. Also, installed the icemaker and bins.

Finally,I conducted all possible test for all components. I deleted previous error codes from memory and reset the system. Also, I run an icemaker test and manually filled up it with water from the settings menu.

Another happy customer!
