Sub Zero 650 frost buildup, Repair – Los Altos, CA

This customer has a Sub Zero 650 frost buildup inside the refrigerator section. She had some other company to troubleshot her unit days before. The Tech came to her place and did not even spend any time on the diagnostics of the unit. He just quotes her for evaporator replacement for $2000. The client thought that the tech was outselling her, because of that reason she decided to have the second opinion on repair. As a result, she contact us to fix her refrigerator.

I came to her place and start troubleshooting the unit. There was a big frost buildup in the back wall. Seems like that compressor was working nonstop and as a result, we had this frost buildup.

First I removed all shelves and back panel to have access to internal parts.

Second I measured the actual temperature of sensors using a laser thermometer. Then went to the diagnostic mode from the panel and collected the temperature readings from sensors. Turned out that sensor on the evaporator coil was showing false temperature, because of that compressor was working nonstop.

Third I warm up my steamer and melted down all this frost buildup. Also, I cleaned the drain tube and washed condenser coil as a part of maintenance.

Forth I replaced the faulty sensor with the new one and hooked it up to the evaporator coil.

Finally, I install all the components back and test the system again for possible failures.

Turned out that quoted $2000 repair from the other technician was misleading and just outsell in this particular case. Amount of money we estimated our repair if 4 times less than other company quotes.

Another happy customer!
