Sub Zero 427RG wine cooler no cold, Repair – Los Gatos, CA

The customer has built-in unit Sub Zero 427RG wine cooler no cold. This is interesting units with wine cooler on the top and refrigerator on the bottom combo. They purchased it 10 years ago and prefer to fix unit rather than buy the new one because this one is in very good shape.

From my experience, I knew in advance that for 10 years old unit it will be most likely freon leak on evaporator coils. Just to make sure I connected my gauges to the sealed system and collect the pressure readings. Seems like my prediction was right because of the negative pressure on the scale.

I offered to replace 2 evaporator coils, one for the white and other for red wine compartments. After I got permission from the customer I ordered the parts. Local parts distributor shipped us one coil and put another one on backorder from manufacturer. Finally, in 10 days after we made the order, we got all parts to finish the job.

First I removed all wine racks, side sliders, covers and back walls for both compartments.

Second I disconnect temperature sensors and cut old evaporator coils. There was a lot of corrosion on the copper pipes which was the reason for the refrigerant leak.

Third I welded new coils and connected all the sensors back. Also, I put new refrigerant gum on the places where heat exchangers are coming inside the fridge to minimize warm air flow and condensation leaks.

Fourth I replaced dryer filter and recharged the system with the proper amount of freon specified on the label.

Fifth I cleaned the drain tube and condenser coil as a part of the unit maintenance. This will improve the sealed system temperature and condensation draining.

Finally, I install all panels, covers, sliders and wine racks. Also, I performed the last check in order to make sure the unit is working as intended.

Another happy customer!
