Sub Zero 424G winecooler not cooling, Repair – San Rafael, CA

A customer called us because of his Sub Zero 424 wine cooler not cooling. Instead of 44-55 degrees client had 72 degrees inside the unit.

A unit is 10 years old. I noticed that there were green oxidation signs on the back wall.  This for me is the sign of corroded evaporator coils and freon leaks on them. Then you have the refrigerant leak on your system freon evaporates and the system just stop producing cold. This was the case here.

This unit is the real challenge for techs, because of bad accessibility to the parts and tight spaces to work.

First I removed all racks, sliders and back panels, to have access to evaporator coils.

Second I cut the old evaporator coils and heat exchangers. I installed new evaporator coils and banded heat exchangers to the proper shapes of the unit. Then I run heat exchangers under the unit, bent them to fit tight space and weld the T connector to connect them to compressors suction line. Also, I welded capillary tubes to freon double valve. Also, I welded service valves to the compressors suction line and dryer filter.

Third I put new refrigerator gum to the places where the copper piping was entering the unit, to prevent warm air go inside the unit. I installed the back cover to protect piping and electrical wiring, installed all back panes, sliders and bottle racks back to the unit.

Finally, I charged the system with the right amount of refrigerant as specified on the service label inside the unit. New evaporator kits come with instructions how much refrigerant to put the instead old amount. After I let the unit worked for 10-15 minutes and was monitoring the pressure. The unit was cooling down slowly which is the good sign for me. After I installed the unit back to the cabinet.

Another happy customer!
